Celestial Navigation

Overview of the course

The modern navigator will make full use of a number of electronic systems, but a prudent navigator will never attempt a long voyage without the knowledge and skills of celestial navigation.  This advanced course will focus on the required skills.

What will I learn?

You will learn to determine a position by careful observation of the sun, moon, some planets, and stars. This is one of the few courses in CPS where practical demonstration of your acquired knowledge is required, in that you must take "sights" and plot your position in order to pass the course.

Prerequisite

Piloting and Advanced Piloting courses.

Study Requirements

About 5 hours per week. If you have basic math skills, and an understanding of how to use a calculator should have no difficulty with this course.
