Overview of the course
|
|
This course gives you the basics - what you need to safely operate a boat in sheltered waters during daylight hours. It is a Canadian Coast Guard accredited course and exam. Part way through you'll get your Pleasure Craft Operator's Card (PCOC). Whether you are a boater, a paddler, or an interested land-lubber, this course is for you. It is chock full of useful information delivered in a friendly and supportive learning environment.

What you will learn
|
|
Boating covers a wide range of topics - from characteristics of boats to maintenance to legal requirements, to navigation and handling. You'll learn how to stay safe - and what to do in an emergency.

Study requirements
|
This is not a difficult course. Basic math skills, a calculator, and approximately three hours study time each week will ensure successful completion. CPS volunteers make themselves available throughout the course to help on a one-on-one basis as needed.

Registration, Fees, and Materials
|
| The fee for this course, including materials, is $225. Additional family members taking the same course $175 ($115 if material can be shared (*)). Price includes one year membership in Nanaimo CPS after successful completion of course. Classes fill up quickly so we advise you to pre-register by contacting our training officer. |

Foot Notes
|
| Divider Kits are $15. A Boating course student that failed has the option to rewrite the exam at a mutually agreed time at no cost within the training Year. However, a student wishing to take the boating course over will have to pay a re-registration fee of $45. If updated course material is required, this will also have to be purchased. (*) A family member sharing the material will receive a Plotter, Chart and Home Work Book.
