Advanced Piloting

Overview of the course

This course takes you beyond the basics to begin learning the skills of a competent navigator.

What will I learn?

You will learn advanced coastal navigation - how to determine your vessel's position by using landmarks and aids to navigation, allowing for current, leeway, tides, and tidal currents.

In this course, you will gain real familiarity with charts and the compass -- the key tools for navigating a course.  You'll learn to steer and time a course, how tides and currents affect navigation, running fixes, electronic navigational aids, and the sextant.

Study Requirements

This is a 12 week intensive course.  Study requirements will vary according to each students prior knowledge but will likely average two hours per week.  There may be some field trips outside of classroom time.
